The Power of Words: Dr. Tina J Ramsay's Journey from a Small-Town Dreamer to TV Extra

Updated: Aug 23

I always talk about the power of words and how important it is to be mindful of what we say. Our words hold so much influence—they can shape our reality, bring blessings, or even create obstacles. This belief was truly put to the test last year, and I want to share my experience with you.

It all started when I needed my makeup done so that I could interview local business owners at a KBBU event in Columbia, S.C. Someone in my network connected me with an amazing makeup artist, and as she was working on my look, a show called Secrets in Plain Sight was playing on Tubi. I’d never seen it before, but I was instantly hooked. As we watched, I realized that the woman doing my makeup was actually an actress on the show! I was blown away and jokingly said, "I’d love to be an extra in this show."

To my surprise, she responded, "You definitely can be—we have extras all the time." That sparked something in me. After interviewing over 12 entrepreneurs, I got home and binge-watched the entire first season. I told myself that when season two came around, I was going to be in it.

About 30 days later, I got a message from my makeup artist telling me they were casting extras for Secrets in Plain Sight and encouraged me to reach out to the director. I did, and to my amazement, she invited me to be a part of the show.

I had a decision to make: keep this opportunity to myself or share it with others. I chose to share it with my CTR Media Network family, letting them know about the casting call and inviting anyone who was interested to join me.

One of our CTR Media Network's podcasters, Veronica James, was able to come along, and it was an incredible experience. But before we got to the set, something unexpected happened.

My husband and I got trapped in an elevator on the way up. At first, I thought it was some sort of initiation for being an extra, like I was being pranked! But no, the elevator really did malfunction. Instead of panicking, I took a deep breath, said a prayer, and focused on what I could be grateful for. We had air conditioning, my phone was fully charged, we had snacks, and I was with the love of my life. Plus, the emergency phone worked, and help was on the way.

Once we were safely out of the elevator, I made it to the set. There I was, participating in a TV show that I had come to love, right in my hometown. I was able to wear clothing styled by my image consultant, Donna Young, and jewelry provided by my consultant, Anna Brothers. Standing on top of one of the tallest buildings in Columbia, South Carolina, looking out at the city, I couldn’t help but thank God for making one of my dreams come true.

Even though I was just an extra and didn’t have a speaking role, it was still a big deal for me. It was something I never thought I’d be able to do, but by praying to God and putting positivity out into the world, it happened.

This whole experience reminded me how powerful our words and thoughts can be. We don’t always realize how much they shape our lives, influencing both the present and the future. I’ve been working on being mindful of what I say and think, knowing that it can either uplift or hold me back. I’m not perfect at it, but I’m committed to being intentional with my words.

I know this was a long story, but I wanted to take you on this journey with me—from a girl from a small town in South Carolina, who spent most of her life battling self-doubt and image issues, to someone who now loves herself, understands her power, and sees her dreams coming true. My relationship with God has grown stronger than ever, and I’m watching some of my biggest dreams unfold right before my eyes.

So dream big, and then dream even bigger. What happened for me can happen for you too, with faith and the power of your words.
